Southend Man Jailed for Punching Cop and Activating Suspended Sentence
Violent Outburst Lands Danny Kelly Behind Bars
Danny Kelly, 60, from York Road, Southend, has been slammed with a two-year jail term after punching a police officer and triggering a suspended sentence. The wheelchair-bound man was sentenced on Friday 21 August at Basildon Crown Court.
Kelly got six months for assaulting an emergency worker and 18 months added for activating an old suspended sentence linked to a vicious 2017 attack.
Shouting, Blocking Traffic, and Then Violence
On 8 June at around 3.30pm, police were called when Kelly was causing a scene—shouting and blocking the road. An ambulance crew reported he was aggressive and had a minor head injury. He was taken to hospital for treatment.
But when Kelly arrived, he threw a wild punch at a female officer.
Previously Behind Bars for Serious Attack
Kelly’s 18-month suspended sentence stems from an August 2017 violent incident in Sutton Road, Southend, where a man was slashed across the face and needed seven stitches.
“Kelly was causing a disturbance, shouting and blocking traffic. We attended to help him get treatment,” said PC Kelly Rayfield of Southend CID. “Our actions were in his best interest but after arriving at hospital, he punched one of our colleagues in the face.”
“These actions were unnecessary and unacceptable. Kelly had a suspended sentence for another attack and will now spend time locked up.”
