Vandals Target Wilton Church, Police Seek Witnesses

Police are hunting for witnesses after Wilton’s St Mary’s Church was vandalised last Thursday (22/10). The damage hit the automatic door locking system between 10am and 5pm, leaving the church vulnerable.

Costly Damage Disrupts Community Landmark

Though the church can still be secured temporarily, repairs will cost hundreds of pounds. PC Jay Greenland of the Salisbury Area Community Policing Team said this attack has hit the local community hard.

“This crime has had a big impact on the local community as this was a church which had remained open during the Covid-19 pandemic, but has now had to be locked up due to the damage to the automatic door locking system. It is also expected to prove very costly to repair the damage.”

Police Urge Parents to Step Forward

Officers are especially keen to speak to a group of local teenagers often seen near the church.

“If you believe your child may either be responsible for the damage, or they may have witnessed something, then please call us,” added PC Greenland.

Anyone with information should contact PC Greenland on 101 quoting crime reference 54200106498, or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
