Young Man Stabbed to Death in Cromer Road Attack
Lee Chapman, 26, was found bleeding and injured on Cromer Road just before midnight on Friday, 6 March. Despite being rushed to hospital, he tragically died from multiple stab wounds, including injuries to his heart and lung.
Chaotic Scene and Dark Escape
A witness described a violent disturbance involving a group of people before Lee collapsed. The attackers fled in a dark-coloured car. While police were at the hospital, a 16-year-old boy arrived with stab wounds to his arm, triggering further investigations.
Suspects Caught on CCTV and Arrested
- Investigators spotted a black Mercedes CLA 180 leaving the attack scene and heading to the hospital. Two young men—one 16, the other 17 (now 18)—exited the vehicle.
- Both were arrested for murder on 8 March.
- Using ANPR and CCTV, police identified Tyrell Thompson, 24, who was dropped off at a Gidea Park taxi rank. Thompson was arrested in Wimbledon on 6 April.
Guilty Verdicts After Trial at Basildon Crown Court
All three men — Thompson and the two younger suspects — denied the charges. But on Tuesday 15 December, they were found guilty of murder. Thompson also faces charges of perverting the course of justice. Sentencing is set for 17 December for Thompson and next year for the other two.
Meanwhile, 45-year-old Sarah Wahid from Southend, previously charged with murder, was acquitted of all charges, including manslaughter.
Police Praise and Promise Justice
“Lee Chapman was a young man who had his whole life ahead of him,” said Detective Chief Inspector Julie Gowen of the Kent and Essex Serious Crime Directorate.
“His life was cut short by a frenzied attack where he was stabbed multiple times before his attackers fled, leaving him for dead.
“Our team worked tirelessly to trace and capture those responsible. This dangerous group will now spend significant time behind bars, making Essex safer.
“I thank Lee’s family for their support and courage throughout our investigation. I hope today’s verdict brings them some justice and peace to move forward.”
