Beware! Hart and Rushmoor Residents Targeted by Doorstep Scammers
Police have issued a stark warning to residents in Hart and Rushmoor to stay alert after a surge in distraction burglaries. Scammers are posing as officials from utility companies like gas, electricity, and water boards to trick their way inside homes.
How the Scam Works
These crooks use a clever two-man tactic. One distracts the victim with a fake story — such as checking water supply — while the other sneaks in to swipe cash or valuables.
Two recent incidents have raised alarm bells. On June 8, in Aldershot’s 1 Road, two men claiming to be from the water board asked elderly residents to run taps and flush toilets. While they distracted the victims, they pinched a bundle of cash.
Then, on June 11 in Farnborough’s Chapel Lane, another man pretending to be from the water board spent 15 minutes inside a home. As he left, a second man dashed out. The result? A large sum of money stolen.

Top Tips to Outsmart Doorstep Scammers
- Lock up: Keep all doors locked, even when you’re home.
- Stop & Think: Pause before opening. Are you expecting anyone?
- Spy & Verify: Use your door viewer or window to spot callers before unlocking.
- Chain Up: If you open the door, secure the chain or door bar first.
- Check ID: Genuine officials wear uniforms with badges. Always ask for ID and close the door while checking.
- Call to Confirm: Don’t trust the number on their ID card. Independently look up the company and phone to verify.
If you suspect a bogus caller, don’t hesitate — ring 999 immediately. Protect yourself, your loved ones, and vulnerable neighbours from these doorstep con artists!
