Woman Who Threw Ex’s Dog Out of Window Dodges Jail

Kayleigh Smee, 33, has escaped prison after allegedly hurling her ex-lover’s Chihuahua, Prince, to his death from a second-floor flat during a fiery row. The heartless act happened on December 10, 2021, leaving the poor eight-year-old dog fatally injured.

Harsh New Animal Cruelty Laws Tested for the First Time

The court called the incident “terrible” as it marked the first sentencing under Britain’s stricter animal cruelty laws. The maximum jail term for causing unnecessary suffering to an animal has been ramped up from six months to five years.

Prince was rushed to a vet but could not be saved and was later euthanised. Maidstone Crown Court Judge Philip Statman condemned the attack. He said, “Prince died in a horrific manner that could have been avoided.” He added the act seemed impulsive, not revenge.

Witnesses Saw the Shocking Moment

Eyewitnesses, including a child, testified seeing Prince thrown from the flat’s window. Smee admitted causing unnecessary pain but denied a deliberate attack initially, claiming the dog might have gone out with clothes. However, witnesses saw only the injured dog on the ground.

The court revealed both Smee and her boyfriend, Ryan Doe, had been drinking heavily. Their argument escalated after Doe damaged the flat’s door and Smee threw crockery out the window before Prince was tossed.

Suspended Sentence and Long Dog Ban

Smee was handed a 12-month jail term, suspended for two years. She must complete 200 hours of unpaid work and attend 30 rehab days. She’s banned from owning or keeping a dog for the next 10 years.

The prosecution cost £17,122, covered by public funds. Smee has since moved away from Doe after facing hostility from neighbours furious about the cruelty.

“Her lack of genuine remorse was clear,” the judge said, noting Smee’s self-centred courtroom behaviour.

This tragic case highlights the serious consequences of animal cruelty under the UK’s tougher laws. Authorities urge the public to report abuse and support animal welfare groups fighting to protect innocent creatures from harm.
