Stepfather Jailed for Life Over Brutal Murder of 10-Month-Old Baby
A chilling murder trial has ended with Craig Crouch, 39, locked up for life after being found guilty of killing his 10-month-old stepson. The infant, Jacob Crouch, was discovered lifeless in his cot, bearing horrific injuries. After a seven-week hearing at Derby Crown Court, Crouch was convicted of murder and three counts of child cruelty. He faces a minimum of 28 years behind bars.
Mother Sentenced for Allowing Baby’s Death
Jacob’s mother, Gemma Barton, 33, was cleared of murder and manslaughter. However, she was convicted of causing or allowing the child’s death and one charge of child cruelty. Barton was handed a 10-year prison sentence for her role in this heartbreaking tragedy.
Shocking Abuse Uncovered
The horror unfolded on December 30, 2020, at the family home in Foxley Chase, Linton, Derbyshire, near Swadlincote. Emergency teams found Jacob critically ill, but he later died at Royal Derby Hospital. A post-mortem revealed at least 39 broken ribs and a fatal bowel perforation causing peritonitis. His injuries showed he had suffered extreme and prolonged abuse.
During the trial, it emerged Crouch calmly called an ambulance, telling the operator the baby was “stone cold,” despite claiming Jacob was “fine” just two hours earlier. Paramedics arrived to find baby Jacob already dead.
Court Hears Disturbing Details of Abuse
Prosecutors described Crouch as “domineering, aggressive, boastful, and arrogant.” The abuse was “intense and prolonged,” with 22 broken ribs sustained in the week before Jacob’s death. Such injuries would have been obvious to any attentive parent.
“Jacob endured acute physical and mental suffering,” said Mr Justice Kerr. “Crouch showed no remorse.”
Disturbing text messages revealed a pattern of abuse by Crouch and Barton. The court was told that either parent seeking medical help could have saved Jacob’s life.
Mother’s Defence: ‘Coerced and Controlled’
Barton’s defence claimed she was “coerced and controlled” by Crouch and failed to protect her son on the fatal night despite knowing the danger he faced. She will serve a decade in prison for her involvement.
Community in Mourning, Calls for Child Protection
The tragic case highlights the urgent need to safeguard vulnerable children. As the community mourns young Jacob, organisations like the NSPCC stress the importance of vigilance against child abuse and encourage anyone concerned to seek help promptly.
