Laptop Buyer Swindles Victim with Fake Bank Transfer

A man conned a Dorset seller out of a £1,400 laptop using a slick online scam on Friday, 18 December 2022.

Fake Transfer Tricks Seller

The victim agreed to sell their laptop via Facebook Marketplace. At around 4.30pm, the buyer showed up at the seller’s Mallard Road address, pretending to make a bank transfer on his phone. He even made a call to “his bank” claiming the money could take two hours to clear.

But the cash never hit the victim’s account. Meanwhile, the dodgy buyer walked off with the expensive laptop, leaving the victim out of pocket.

Police Launch Hunt for Fraudster

PC Al Brown from Dorset Police said: “We are investigating this incident and have a photo of the man we want to speak to. We urge anyone who recognises him to get in touch immediately.”

“Always check and be completely satisfied the money is in your bank account before you hand over the goods. Genuine buyers will accept that this is correct practice.”
