Grandson Jailed for Life Over Grandfather’s Murder
A 27-year-old man has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum of 15 years behind bars for murdering his grandfather.
Benjamin Dunlop Pleads Guilty
Benjamin Dunlop, who has no fixed address, appeared at Leicester Crown Court on Friday. He admitted to the killing of his grandfather, Ronald Dunlop, back in November 2022.
Tragic Scene Discovered in Measham
- Ronald Dunlop, 75, was found dead at a home in Hart Drive, Measham, where Benjamin was staying temporarily, just before 5pm on 1 December 2021.
- East Midlands Ambulance Service was called after concerns for the welfare of both men and fears Benjamin had self-harmed.
- At the scene, officers also found a dead cat belonging to a neighbour.
Benjamin later returned to the address and admitted to harming both his grandfather and the cat to ambulance crews.
Charges and Sentencing
Two days later, Benjamin was charged with murder and criminal damage related to the death of the cat. He will serve a concurrent six-month sentence for the animal’s death.
“While this sentence doesn’t bring him back, or repair the tragic situation this family has found itself in, knowing that Ben is serving his time for what he did will, I hope, allow them to move on from what has been a lengthy wait for justice,” said Detective Chief Inspector Nicole Main of the East Midlands Special Operations Unit.
