Traffic Relief Incoming on A29 Pulborough with New Single-Lane Route

Concrete Blocks Clear the Way

Work is underway to get the A29 in Pulborough moving again. After clearing overhanging tree branches, council highway contractors are installing concrete blocks to create a temporary single-lane road.

This week, concrete barriers have been placed on both sides of Church Hill’s affected stretch. The result? A tough, protected 50-metre single-lane carriageway right down the middle of the road. The final block goes in today, Friday, April 14.

Road Reopens Next Week — Plan Your Journey

On Monday, contractors will lay down 100mm of surfacing to stabilise the new lane. The A29 is set to reopen on Tuesday, April 18, at 11am—timed so the morning rush can clear first.

Traffic lights will control two-way flow on Church Hill, ensuring all vehicles can pass safely. To cut down on queues, signals will be manually managed during peak times, with daily tweaks as needed.

Pedestrians Diverted, Safety a Top Priority

Pedestrians won’t be able to use Church Hill due to the concrete blockades. Alternative, signposted routes will be available.

Experts have assessed various options and backed the two-way single-lane setup despite possible queues at each end. Manual control of traffic signals during busy periods will help ease jams.

Watchful Eyes on Embankments and Future Fixes

The county council will keep embankments under constant review to keep conditions safe. Meanwhile, they’re working on a long-term solution for this pinch point.
