Goldfish Giveaway Ban Set to Splash Down at Redcar Fairgrounds
Council Bans Live Fish Prizes
Redcar and Cleveland councillors have thrown a unanimous vote behind a motion to ban giving away live goldfish at local fairs. The move slams the old-school practice of treating living creatures like cheap trinkets.
Animal Welfare Takes Centre Stage
Conservative councillor Justin Thompson from Skelton East led the charge, calling the ban vital for protecting animal welfare. His motion won support across party lines, showing local politicians are united on this one.
The RSPCA has long campaigned against this “outdated practice,” with public affairs manager Gingell stressing the ban is a key step to safeguard the little swimmers.
Heavy Penalties for Rule-Breakers
Once in place, the ban lets Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council slap severe penalties on any fairground operators caught handing out goldfish in plastic bags. This cruel tradition often leads to the fish dying shortly after being taken home.
MP Backs Ban, Wants It Nationwide
Middlesbrough South and East Cleveland MP Simon Clarke voiced strong support, saying there’s no good reason to oppose the ban. It falls in line with existing rules in England and Wales that restrict fish giveaways to children under 16 unless accompanied by an adult.
With Scotland already outlawing live animal prizes, Redcar and Cleveland is set to join the growing list of areas shutting down this cruel fairground fad for good.
