Sewage Scandal Sparks Big Protest at Kingston Beach
Environmental warriors from Surfers Against Sewage (SAS) are hitting Kingston Beach in Southwick this Saturday, January 6th, demanding an end to Southern Water’s filthy dumping of raw sewage into the Adur estuary. The demo kicks off at noon right by the sewage outfall near the Kingston Beach car park.
Southern Water Dumps Raw Sewage for Nearly 200 Hours Since Christmas
Southern Water has reportedly poured untreated wastewater into the estuary for almost 200 hours since Christmas at the Combined Sewer Outfall at The Green, Southwick. Kingston Beach, beloved by swimmers year-round—especially during the harsh winter months—is now at risk.
Poisoned Waters Equal 3 Olympic Pools of Sewage
SAS calculates the toxic muck dumped is the equivalent of more than three Olympic-sized swimming pools. The group warns of serious health risks, especially as neither Adur Council, Southern Water, nor the Environment Agency have issued any public warnings.
Activists Demand Urgent Action from Authorities
- Stop all sewage dumping immediately.
- Adur Council and the Environment Agency to issue “Bathe at Your Own Risk” advisories.
- Environment Agency to confirm if it was told about any sewage faults and reveal enforcement steps taken.
- Adur Council to start officially designating Kingston Beach as a bathing beach.
Meanwhile, SAS urges swimmers, surfers, and canoeists to stay cautious. Use the Safer Seas and River Service app to check for updates and report any illnesses linked to water activities. Campaigners also want the public to raise their voices by contacting their MPs and Southern Water’s CEO.
This protest is part of a wider fight by environmental groups to hold water companies to account and protect the UK’s beaches and waterways from pollution.
