M25 Shutdown Incoming: Expect Chaos on Surrey Stretch
Motorists, brace yourselves! The M25 is set for another major closure from 9pm on May 10 until 6am on May 13. The shutdown hits the busy Surrey stretch between junctions nine and ten, promising long delays and snarled traffic.
£317 Million Makeover Triggers Weekend Closures
This is the second of five weekend shutdowns planned as part of a massive £317 million upgrade of junction ten. During the closure, giant concrete beams—some weighing up to 40 tonnes—will be lifted into place for a new bridge and gantry, making the roads impassable.
Long Diversions & No ULEZ Charges on Official Routes
- Drivers will be rerouted along a 19-mile diversion via the A3 and A243.
- Following the official diversion means no Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) charges apply.
- ULEZ remains active on all other London routes, so watch out!
Jonathan Wade, senior project manager at National Highways, stressed the importance of following diversion signs, especially for over-height vehicles who face longer detours. He warned: “Please heed all advice to reduce congestion and keep delays to a minimum.”
Disruption to Hit Hard – Avoid If You Can!
The new bridge will need 68 beams weighing 16 tonnes each plus four mega 40-tonne beams installed. Expect serious traffic headaches on one of the UK’s busiest motorway junctions, with up to 270,000 vehicles passing through daily.
The full project aims to boost traffic flow and safety, with completion due summer 2025. But in the meantime, drivers and businesses face a major logistical headaches.
Authorities Brace for Impact
National Highways is working closely with emergency services, local councils, and airports to ease disruption for residents and travellers. They urge motorists to plan ahead, consider alternative routes, and avoid the closed stretch where possible.
Good news for June! No weekend closures are planned before the next shutdowns between July and December. Dates for these will be confirmed following the May closure.
The message from the top: Stick to diversion routes, stay patient, and help make these vital upgrades run smoothly!
