Farmer Held Over Fatal Shooting During Derbyshire Burglary
A 19-year-old man is dead and another teenager seriously injured after a shooting in Whaley Bridge, Derbyshire. Police have arrested a farmer, who is now being questioned on suspicion of murder and attempted murder.
Gunfire Erupts Amid Burglary Reports
Derbyshire Police rushed to Eccles Road at 1:20am Wednesday following reports of a burglary. Officers found the teenager, later named locally as Marcus Smith, suffering fatal gunshot wounds. Another teen nearby was also wounded by gunfire.
Marcus Smith was well known in the community for playing football and DJing at a pub close to the scene.
Community Shocked by Violence
Residents described the shooting as a terrifying and rare event in their normally quiet town. Keely Tomlinson, 25, said: “It’s so rare to have anything like this happen here. It’s really worrying for everyone’s safety.”
Local man Dave Arnfield, 65, added the death was “totally unexpected and very sad.” Simon Barnwell, 60, noted how the community has since beefed up security at their homes.
Ongoing Investigation and Arrests
Police are linking the shooting to a burglary reported at the same property the previous afternoon. A man in his 50s remains in custody over murder and attempted murder charges.
The injured teenager, suspected of involvement in the burglary, is in hospital. Another man has also been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary after a vehicle stop.
Divisional commander Chief Superintendent Dave Kirby thanked locals for their support and said, “This incident appears targeted rather than random.”
Officers urge anyone with information to come forward as investigations continue. This complex case is far from over.
