Tragic Return of Missing Teen Jay Slater
The body of Jay Slater, 19, who vanished on holiday in Tenerife, has finally been flown back to the UK after two months. His family revealed plans for a ‘celebration‘ of his life on Saturday, August 10, at the Chapel at Accrington Crematorium, Lancashire.
How Jay Got Lost: A Deadly Shortcut
Jay, from Oswaldtwistle, Lancashire, disappeared on June 17 while trying to walk back to his accommodation in Los Cristianos. Believing he had found a shortcut, he attempted to cross the rugged mountains. His last known spot was Rural de Teno Park, a remote area nearly 11 hours on foot from where he was staying. Earlier, he’d enjoyed the NRG music festival with friends.
Heartbreaking Discovery Effort
A Dutch search team, including specialist dogs, located Jay’s body after a grueling five-hour trek into the remote Barranco Juan Lopez valley. Their Belgian Malinois dog, Flex, helped pinpoint the grim site. The team documented the scene to give Jay’s family much-needed closure.
Search footage shows the dangerous ravine where Jay was found, surrounded by cliffs. Experts believe he lost his footing trying to scale these cliffs to reach the sea below.
Cause of Death Confirmed: Fatal Head Injuries
A UK postmortem confirmed Jay died instantly from traumatic head injuries consistent with a fall from height.
Funeral Details: Celebrate Jay’s Life
Jay’s funeral on August 10 will be a celebration of his vibrant life. Attendees are asked to wear something blue in his memory, reflecting his love of music and friendship.
Community Rallies Behind Family
The frantic search lasted over four weeks, with a GoFundMe campaign originally for the search now funding Jay’s body repatriation and funeral. Started by friend Lucy Mae, the fund has raised a staggering £74,000 — more than double its £30,000 target.
Remembering Jay: A Life Loved
Jay’s family described him as a “loving son,” passionate about football, music, and dance. His mother, Debbie Duncan, thanked supporters and said they will honour Jay’s lively spirit at the funeral.
“Jay’s love of music and dance started at a very young age. He loved attending music festivals and events across the country and enjoyed socialising and meeting new people,” the family said.
