Violence Soars at Belmarsh Prison
Belmarsh Prison, the UK’s notorious high-security jail in Thamesmead, has seen a shocking surge in violence. New Ministry of Justice figures reveal 290 assaults in the year to March 2024 — up from 239 the previous year.
Of these attacks, 100 were on staff and 189 were prisoner-on-prisoner violence. With some incidents overlapping, the true number of assaults could be even higher. This brutal spike reflects a wider unrest gripping the UK’s toughest prisons.
National Prison Violence Hits Post-Pandemic High
Across England and Wales, prison assaults hit a staggering 28,292 last year — a 27% jump. The increase has sparked alarm among prison reform advocates and highlighted the dangerous conditions staff and inmates endure daily.
“This is a shameful reflection of just how far safety in our prisons has fallen,” said the Prison Reform Trust. They are urging the government to act fast to restore order and safety behind bars.
Self-Harm Crisis Deepens
The Ministry of Justice also reports a sharp rise in self-harm incidents, reaching the highest levels ever recorded. Nationally, prisoners self-harmed 73,804 times in the past year — that’s one incident every seven minutes. At Belmarsh, self-harm cases climbed from 337 to 352.
Andrea Coomber, Chief Executive of the Howard League for Penal Reform, warned, “There’s a crisis of human misery behind bars. Violent, distressing conditions do not help prisoners turn their lives around.”
Prison Conditions Spiral Out of Control
Of the 119 adult prisons in England and Wales, 35 are rated as ‘of concern’ and 15 as ‘of serious concern’ — with Belmarsh among them. The number of prisons flagged as ‘serious concern’ has risen by six in just one year, underlining the growing chaos in the system.
Pressure is mounting on the government to crack down on the causes of this crisis. Calls are growing louder for sweeping reforms to improve safety, mental health support, and the overall prison environment for staff and inmates alike.
