Birmingham Teen Shaan Farooq Found Guilty of Terrorism Charges

Farooq Caught Distributing ISIS Propaganda

A 19-year-old from Birmingham, Shaan Farooq, was convicted at Birmingham Crown Court for distributing terrorist material. The Saltley teen pleaded guilty to possessing extremist content from May to July 2022 and was found guilty on three counts of intentionally spreading terrorist propaganda.

In July 2022, police uncovered a stash of extremist content on Farooq’s phone, laptop, tablet, and iPad during a raid on his home. The materials linked Farooq directly to the banned terrorist group Islamic State (Daesh) and suggested he planned to distribute them to incite terrorism.

Friend Also Jailed for Terror Offences

Farooq’s arrest in August 2022 came alongside his friend Amir El-Harith, 20, from nearby Smethwick. El-Harith was sentenced in July this year to six and a half years behind bars for multiple terrorism offences, including distributing propaganda between April and June 2022 and posting extremist videos on Instagram.

El-Harith also received a separate sentence of three years and 10 months for possessing bomb-making instructions. He continued to access extremist material while on bail. Once released, he will be subject to a four-year Serious Crime Prevention Order and extended licence period.

Sentencing Looms for Farooq

Farooq remains in custody and is due for sentencing on December 11 at Birmingham Crown Court. Authorities continue to stress the crucial role of public vigilance in preventing terrorism.
