Taxi Driver Jailed for Sex Assault on Passenger

A 51-year-old taxi driver, Jaswinder Singh, has been slapped with a 30-month prison sentence for sexually assaulting a female passenger during a night journey in Falkirk.

The shocking verdict came down on Tuesday, 25 March, at Falkirk Sheriff Court, shaking the local community and reigniting fears over passenger safety and trust in the transport sector.

Attack on Trust During Night Ride

The incident happened in the early hours of Sunday, 4 February 2024. Singh picked up the woman, who thought she was on a safe trip home. Instead, he abused his position and sexually assaulted her during the journey.

The victim showed incredible bravery by reporting Singh to police, leading to a fast and thorough investigation.

Police Crack Down, Swift Justice

The Forth Valley Public Protection Unit took charge, quickly arresting and charging Singh. Court heard he deliberately exploited his role as a licensed taxi driver to prey on a lone female passenger.

Detective Sergeant Stewart Walton praised the victim’s courage, saying:

“Jaswinder Singh was in a position of trust when he took advantage of this woman, who relied on him to get home safely. He abused that trust, and his actions are sickening. I would like to commend the victim for her strength in coming forward. Her courage was essential in bringing Singh to justice.”

DS Walton also stressed police will relentlessly pursue offenders and support victims of sexual crime.

Sentenced, Registered, and Warning Issued

Singh was sentenced to two years and six months behind bars, a punishment reflecting the gravity of his crime. He is expected to be placed on the Sex Offenders Register and face further restrictions.

Police urge anyone experiencing or witnessing sexual misconduct on public transport to report it immediately. All claims will be taken seriously and handled sensitively.
