Grandson Sentenced to Life for Killing Grandfather and Neighbour’s Cat
A 27-year-old man has been locked up for life after pleading guilty to murdering his grandfather. Benjamin Dunlop, homeless at the time, faced Leicester Crown Court for sentencing over the shocking crime he admitted last November.
Fatal Attack at Grandfather’s Home
Ronald Dunlop, 75, was found dead shortly before 5pm on December 1, 2021. The grim discovery came at the Hart Drive address in Measham, where Benjamin had been staying temporarily.
Emergency services were first called after reports raised concerns about both men’s well-being and fears that Benjamin had harmed himself. Police and paramedics arrived to find Ronald dead, as well as a cat belonging to a neighbour – also dead.
Shocking Confession and Charges
Benjamin later returned to the scene and confessed to ambulance staff that he had attacked both his grandfather and the cat. He was swiftly charged with murder and criminal damage related to the cat’s death.
He received a six-month concurrent sentence for the animal cruelty charge alongside his life sentence for murder.
Investigator’s Statement on Justice
“First and foremost, my thoughts remain with Ronald’s family,” said Detective Chief Inspector Nicole Main of the East Midlands Special Operations Unit.
“While this sentence will not bring him back or undo the tragedy, knowing Benjamin is behind bars may help the family find some peace after their long wait for justice.”
