Grandson Jailed for Life for Murdering Grandad and Neighbour’s Cat
A 27-year-old man who admitted killing his grandfather has been handed a life sentence, with a minimum of 15 years behind bars.
Benjamin Dunlop Sentenced at Leicester Crown Court
Benjamin Dunlop, who has no fixed address, appeared at Leicester Crown Court today (Friday) for sentencing. He pleaded guilty to murdering his 75-year-old grandfather, Ronald Dunlop, back in November 2022.
Gruesome Discovery at Measham Home
Ronald Dunlop was found dead at a Hart Drive, Measham house where Benjamin had been staying temporarily. Police arrived just before 5pm on 1 December 2021, after East Midlands Ambulance Service raised concerns.
- The ambulance crew were called over worries Benjamin had harmed himself and his grandfather.
- At the scene, officers also found a cat, belonging to a neighbour, dead alongside Ronald.
Benjamin returned to the house shortly after and confessed to ambulance paramedics that he had harmed both his grandfather and the cat.
Charges and Reactions
Two days later, Benjamin Dunlop was charged with murder and criminal damage for the cat’s death. He received a six-month sentence for the latter, to run alongside his life term.
Detective Chief Inspector Nicole Main of East Midlands Special Operations Unit said: “Firstly, my thoughts remain with the family of Ronald.
“While this sentence doesn’t bring him back or heal this tragic situation, knowing Benjamin is serving time for his actions should help the family move on after a long wait for justice.”
