Grimsby MP Melanie Onn slams local council system as “powerless” amid scandal
Outrage as Councillors with Criminal Records Keep Their Seats
Melanie Onn, MP for Grimsby and Cleethorpes, has blasted the local government system as “powerless” and demanded urgent reforms. Her warning comes as fury grows over North East Lincolnshire Council and others allowing councillors tainted by serious crimes to stay in office.
Legal loopholes mean some councillors dodge punishment and cling to their roles, sparking public outrage and calls for change.
Government Plans New Laws to Clean Up Local Politics
Ms Onn supports fresh government proposals introducing a national code of conduct for councillors. The new rules would give councils the power to:
- Suspend councillors guilty of serious misconduct
- Slash allowances when behaviour falls short
- Impose tougher penalties on repeat offenders
“When bad behaviour goes unpunished, it damages trust in local government as a whole,” Onn said. “These reforms will finally give councils the tools they need to act quickly and fairly.”
Rebuilding Trust in Politics
The MP stressed that restoring faith in local governance is crucial. She urged swift action to set higher standards and hold councillors to account.
“Too many residents feel they can’t fully trust local government,” she warned. “That’s why I’m backing tough new laws to clean up local politics.”
