John Boddy, 48, a bin lorry driver from Chatham, has pleaded guilty to causing the death of a pensioner by careless driving. The admission was made at Bromley Magistrates’ Court on Monday, June 17.

The fatal crash took place on the morning of September 20, 2022, near the junction of The Grove and West Wickham High Street. Police responded to reports of a collision between a lorry and a pedestrian at around 7:20 AM. The victim, a man in his 70s, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene.

Bromley Council confirmed that the lorry involved was not a council vehicle nor operated by a council contractor. This has raised questions regarding the ownership and operation of the vehicle involved in the incident.

John Boddy is due to be sentenced at a later date, with further legal proceedings pending. The case has sparked renewed calls for enhanced road safety measures and stricter enforcement against careless driving in the local community.

The community remains deeply affected by the loss and is awaiting justice in this tragic case.
