Drivers on the M25 in Essex faced significant delays this morning after a lorry fire caused major disruption between junctions 25 and 28. The motorway experienced heavy congestion, with traffic jams extending for six miles and adding approximately 90 minutes to usual travel times.
Emergency services including Essex Police, Essex Fire & Rescue, and Traffic Officers responded promptly to the incident. Although the fire has now been extinguished, lanes 1, 2, and 3 remain closed between junctions 27 and 28 to allow for a complex recovery operation.
The recovery team had to cut apart the lorry’s trailer due to its height in order to safely load it onto a flatbed recovery vehicle. This step was necessary to clear the bridges located between the affected junctions.
Complicating the recovery, pallets of wood carried on the lorry have been smouldering and occasionally re-igniting, which has prolonged the cleanup process. Firefighters remain on site to monitor and prevent any flare-ups, contributing to the extended delays for motorists.
Traffic is currently backed up for six miles, stretching back to junction 25. Authorities are advising commuters to delay their journeys or seek alternative routes where possible. Variable message signs along the motorway continue to provide updates to drivers.
