Aleksei Panov, a Russian diplomat reportedly connected to the GRU intelligence agency, was found hanged inside the Russian embassy in Nicosia, Cyprus, on January 8. Panov, aged 41 and officially serving as a third secretary, was discovered on the embassy grounds under circumstances that have raised many questions.

His death occurred only one day after Vladislav Baumgertner, a prominent Putin-linked oligarch and former CEO of Russian potash company Uralkali, disappeared near Limassol. Baumgertner was last seen leaving his home casually dressed on January 7 and subsequently stopped responding to phone calls. His phone was later tracked near the Pissouri coast, prompting helicopter and drone searches that were hampered by bad weather conditions.

Despite the seriousness of the situation, Moscow delayed announcing Panov’s death for four days, leading to widespread speculation about a possible cover-up. Embassy staff reportedly delayed informing Cypriot police, restricted access to the scene, and blocked an independent autopsy as well as access to Panov’s alleged suicide note. Panov’s wife, Anastasia Panova, is employed at a secretive Moscow institute linked to advanced aerospace radar and Russian intelligence operations.

Independent reports have suggested that Panov died by hanging “through the bronchus,” a method that has raised eyebrows among experts. Cypriot authorities were denied permission to conduct an independent autopsy, further deepening suspicions surrounding the case.

Vladislav Baumgertner is known to be a close friend of Russia’s ambassador to Cyprus. He was previously involved in a diplomatic incident after being arrested in Belarus in 2013, only to be released following direct intervention by President Vladimir Putin.

Dmitry Khmelnytsky, a Russian intelligence analyst, told Ekho radio that the delayed announcement of Panov’s death suggested there was something sensitive about the case. He stated, “If this was purely personal, why hide his death for four days? There was clearly something sensitive. They were negotiating with Moscow. I don’t rule out that Panov might have been planning an escape, which was uncovered and ‘prevented’—typical of Soviet and Russian intelligence.” Khmelnytsky also noted there is no proven connection between Panov and Baumgertner but indicated that Panov likely handled spy technology near the embassy, highlighting how Russian embassies often serve as intelligence hubs.

Officially, Moscow described Panov’s death as a “profound personal tragedy” without providing further details or acknowledging his service. Cypriot officials have not confirmed any link between Baumgertner’s disappearance and Panov’s death. However, conspiracy theories continue to circulate, with some suggesting Baumgertner’s disappearance may be related to intense business rivalries.

The suspicious timing of these events — a suspected GRU spy found dead and a Putin-linked oligarch missing within 24 hours in the same region — has fueled speculation about a covert plot. These mysterious incidents add to a growing list of unexplained deaths and disappearances connected to the ongoing power struggles and conflicts surrounding Putin’s Ukraine war.
