A family has escaped serious injury following a multi-vehicle crash on the M20 smart motorway, which caused major delays for drivers travelling towards London through Kent.
The collision occurred shortly after 1.05pm between Junction 4 (A228 Leybourne/Snodland) and Junction 3 (M26 interchange). Emergency services arrived promptly at the scene, temporarily holding traffic and resulting in severe tailbacks.
Traffic congestion extended back to Junction 5 (Aylesford) on the westbound carriageway. One lane remained closed due to the incident, leading to lengthy delays during the afternoon rush hour.
National Highways and Kent Police confirmed that all individuals involved were accounted for and no life-threatening injuries were reported. Motorists have been advised to allow extra travel time or consider alternative routes while recovery operations continue.
This incident has brought renewed attention to smart motorway safety concerns. Critics point to the limited hard shoulder space as a factor that may increase the risk of collisions. National Highways has not yet commented on whether the smart motorway design played a role in this crash.
