Surrey Police alerted the South East Regional Operations Centre (SEROC) shortly after 5pm today regarding a serious incident on the M23 motorway. The southbound carriageway between Junction 8 and Junction 9 is now completely closed.
Emergency services including South East Coast Ambulance and National Highways Traffic Officers responded promptly to the scene. In addition to the southbound closure, lanes 3 and 4 on the northbound side are also closed, resulting in significant traffic congestion.
Authorities confirmed that a person was found on the motorway carriageway, which has led to a full police investigation. Surrey Police have been contacted for further details on the incident.
Motorists are advised to follow the official diversion routes to avoid delays:
- Leave the M25 at Junction 9 (Leatherhead)
- Take the A243 southbound exit at Junction 9
- At Knoll Roundabout, take the 2nd exit onto the A24
- Continue on the A24 towards Horsham
- At Great Daux Roundabout, take the 1st exit onto the A264
- Stay on the A264 until reaching M23 Junction 11 (Pease Pottage Interchange)
Traffic heading for Gatwick Airport should enter the M23 northbound and exit at Junction 9.
Drivers affected by the closure are advised to allow extra travel time, consider alternative routes, or delay their journeys if possible.
