Sir David Amess’s murder has been declared a terror attack by The Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, which is leading a high-profile investigation after the fatal stabbing in Essex. Officers are working closely with Essex Police and the Eastern Region Specialist Operations Unit (ERSOU) to investigate the incident.
Deputy Assistant Commissioner Dean Haydon, Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, officially branded the attack as terrorism. Early inquiries suggest the motive behind the attack could be linked to Islamist extremism.
Essex Police responded to an address in Eastwood Road North just after midday on Friday, 15 October, where they found a man with multiple stab wounds. Despite emergency treatment, Sir David Amess, the Member of Parliament for Southend West, died at the scene.
A 25-year-old British man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and is currently being held at an Essex police station. Police are also conducting searches at two addresses in London as part of the ongoing investigation. Authorities believe the attacker acted alone and are not seeking any further suspects.
Detectives have issued a call for witnesses, urging anyone with information or footage related to the attack to come forward. Members of the public can contact police confidentially on 0800 789 321 or submit images and videos via the official police link.
