Nick Adderley, the former Northamptonshire Police Chief Constable, has been officially cleared of fraud allegations by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). The accusations were related to police vehicle maintenance during his tenure at Staffordshire Police but have now been dismissed.

Adderley led Northamptonshire Police from July 2018 until his dismissal in June 2024. He was arrested in June 2023 alongside a fellow ex-Staffordshire officer and two members of the public. They were investigated over alleged fraud involving the upkeep of police vehicles. However, after a detailed investigation directed by the IOPC, it was confirmed that Adderley “has no case to answer.”

An IOPC spokesperson said: “It has been decided that the former officer has no case to answer. The investigation, carried out under the direction of the IOPC, also found no indication of criminality on the part of the still-serving officer.” The IOPC has now stepped back and handed the case back to Staffordshire Police for local review.

Despite being cleared of fraud, Adderley’s police career ended in disgrace. In June 2024, he was dismissed following a five-day gross misconduct hearing. The panel found that he lied about his military record, exaggerating his naval rank, length of service, and achievements. These repeated fabrications were ruled gross misconduct, resulting in his immediate dismissal.

Following the misconduct hearing, the IOPC referred evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS), whose decision on potential charges is still pending.

The news of Adderley’s fraud clearance sparked mixed reactions on social media. One user commented: “If he’s cleared of fraud, that’s one thing—but lying about military service is still a serious breach of trust.” Others welcomed the fraud decision but expressed lingering doubts about his integrity and past conduct.

While the fraud allegations have been dropped, Adderley’s reputation remains affected by his dishonesty regarding his military record. The CPS’s next steps on misconduct-related charges are awaited. This story is ongoing, and updates will follow as the local investigation continues.
