A science and technology teacher, Mark Langford, 55, has been caught with thousands of child abuse images and has admitted to sexually assaulting a pupil nearly 20 years ago.
The National Crime Agency (NCA) launched a major investigation in November 2021 after Google alerted authorities to a user sharing child abuse material. The tip-off came through the US-based National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC). Authorities quickly identified Langford and raided his home in Beccles, Suffolk.
Further inquiries revealed that Langford groomed and sexually assaulted a 15-year-old pupil in Lowestoft between 2004 and 2006. The NCA discovered a letter Langford wrote in April instructing the victim on how to lie if questioned, stating: “Before you talk to him, please remember that it is his job to convict me – please do not give him any accidental ammunition against me. You can tell him you know I’m a porn addict, and that I was arrested for having indecent images of children. Don’t forget the ‘arrested for’ bit – don’t say I did it, or that I confessed to you, because that might drag you into court as a witness. I don’t know if it will, but that’s not a question I dare ask him.”
Upon arrest, Langford reportedly admitted, “It’s all in there, I know what you’re looking for, I’ve made a mistake and ruined everything.”
Officers seized five devices containing 2,718 indecent images of children in categories A to C, with category A being the most severe. Additionally, 199 prohibited images and 109 extreme pornographic images were found. Langford used peer-to-peer networks and a cloud platform popular among paedophiles to trade illegal content.
Investigators also uncovered disturbing online chats where Langford discussed child rape, encouraged abuse, and shared methods to inflict pain and humiliation. He provided others with tips on where to find child sexual abuse material online.
Langford had worked at secondary schools across Suffolk and Norfolk from 1996 until his arrest. At the time of the investigation, he was employed by a free schools trust operating in Beccles, Bury St Edmunds, and Saxmundham.
On 10 July at Ipswich Crown Court, Langford pleaded guilty to multiple charges including indecent assault, possession and distribution of indecent images of children, perverting the course of justice, and possession of extreme pornographic images. He was remanded in custody and is due to be sentenced on 25 September.
Holly Triggs, NCA Operations Manager, said: “Mark Langford grossly abused his position of trust. His offending was despicable and manipulative. This was clear in how he tried to coerce his victim into lying and the explicit chats he had with other paedophiles online. The NCA will keep protecting children by hunting down the highest risk offenders and making sure they face justice.”
Langford was dismissed by his employer in January last year following the investigation.
