Didcot, Oxfordshire – What started as a rescue mission has turned into a grim recovery operation at Didcot A Power Station. On Wednesday afternoon, demolition work took a tragic turn when the 10-storey boiler room collapsed, trapping three men under the rubble.
The incident occurred at 4.05pm when a loud bang was heard throughout the power station. Half of Boiler 1 gave way, causing dust clouds to billow and chaos to erupt at the site. One demolition worker died instantly, while five others sustained injuries.
Emergency services responded swiftly. The South Central Ambulance Service (SCAS) declared a major incident and dispatched two air ambulances, six land ambulances, a rapid response vehicle, and a hazardous area team to the scene. Approximately 50 nearby residents sought medical treatment for breathing difficulties caused by the thick dust cloud.
Specialist rescue teams, including elite urban search and rescue squads from Buckinghamshire and other areas, were called in to assist. Equipped with sniffer dogs, these teams have been searching the debris throughout the night in a desperate effort to locate the three missing men.
A rescue official stated, “We are doing everything possible to find survivors.” The operation continues as authorities work to manage the aftermath of this devastating collapse at Didcot A Power Station.
