Five fire engines from Surrey and the London Fire Brigade, along with an ambulance, rushed to HM Prison Highdown after a fire broke out on Wednesday night.

The Category B men’s prison, located on the outskirts of Banstead in Surrey, was thrown into chaos when a prisoner deliberately set his cell and himself on fire at around 9.10pm.

Despite the alarming scene, prison officers managed to extinguish the fire before firefighters arrived at the scene. Fire crews and paramedics remained on site for safety precautions.

The inmate received emergency treatment with oxygen for smoke inhalation and burns. An ambulance crew attended to his injuries before transporting him for further medical care.

The Prison Service has been contacted for a comment on the incident.
