A Metropolitan Police officer is facing possible charges over the fatal shooting of Chris Kaba, 24, who was shot dead by a single bullet fired through his car windscreen last year. The shot came from an unidentified officer, leading to protests and community outrage.

The Independent Office of Police Conduct (IOPC) has completed its investigation and submitted a file of evidence to the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS). The CPS will now determine whether to press charges against the officer involved.

“During the investigation, the officer was advised that they were under criminal investigation for murder,” said Amanda Rowe, IOPC director of operations. “Following the conclusion of our investigation, we have referred a file of evidence to the CPS to determine whether to charge the officer.”

On the night of September 5, 2022, Chris Kaba was driving an Audi linked to a previous firearms incident. However, he was unarmed and not treated as a suspect. At 9:52pm, armed police followed Kaba’s car in an unmarked vehicle near Camberwell Green, south London, without using sirens or lights.

By 10:07pm, Kaba turned into Kirkstall Gardens, Streatham, where police cars were parked. There was contact between Kaba’s Audi and police vehicles before a single fatal bullet was fired through the windscreen by officer NX121.

Kaba, who was due to become a father, never met his baby daughter, born just days before his funeral. His family continues to seek answers and justice. The tragic shooting has sparked protests and community events, with locals demanding accountability for the deadly police action.
