Essex Police dog PD Kaiser and his handler PC Martin Swain have been honoured with the National Police Chiefs’ Council Police Dogs General Patrol Dog Award. This prestigious award recognises them as the best police dog team in England and Wales, celebrating their outstanding operational achievements over the past year.
PD Kaiser, a five-year-old German Shepherd, has demonstrated exceptional courage and skill in several incidents. One notable event saw Kaiser pursue a suspect into a deep water ditch on the A13, where he bravely dived under the surface to assist in the arrest. In another case, Kaiser successfully detained an offender in a field despite being repeatedly assaulted.
Kaiser has also shown remarkable ability in complex crime tracking. He has excelled in lengthy and intricate tracking operations that led to the capture of burglary suspects. His determination and expertise have made him an invaluable asset to Essex Police’s efforts in fighting crime.
PC Martin Swain, who has served with Essex Police for 19 years, has been Kaiser’s handler since the dog was just eight weeks old. Kaiser lives at home with PC Swain and his family, highlighting the strong bond between them.
Speaking about Kaiser, PC Swain said, “He’s an exceptional dog. He’s very determined and very demanding, he loves work and he loves to play. He’s everything you could want in a police dog. He’s not a mundane, robotic dog. He’s the complete opposite of that.”
