The Metropolitan Police has formally apologised for mistakes and corruption in the long-running Daniel Morgan axe murder case. The force has admitted liability and agreed to a “mutually satisfactory settlement” with the private investigator’s family after years of controversy and oversight.

Daniel Morgan, co-founder of Southern Investigations, was brutally killed with an axe in the car park of the Golden Lion pub in Sydenham, south-east London, on 10 March 1987. Despite numerous investigations over the past 36 years, justice has remained elusive for his family.

Frustrated by continual stonewalling, the Morgan family pursued legal action against the Metropolitan Police. Following mediation, the Met admitted liability relating to officer conduct during the flawed investigation. Although the settlement terms are confidential, sources indicate a payout of approximately £2 million was agreed.

Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley said, “We deeply regret letting down the Morgan family again and again. The failure to bring those responsible to justice is inexcusable.”

The investigation was marred by police corruption, incompetence, and a culture prioritising the force’s reputation over uncovering the truth. The Morgan family suffered decades of broken promises and false hope as the inquiry was repeatedly mishandled.

Commissioner Rowley personally met with the Morgan family, listened to their painful testimony, and acknowledged that the prolonged struggle had severely damaged their trust in the police. Their persistent efforts have exposed systemic failings and underscored the urgent need for police reform and genuine accountability.
