A suspected World War Two bomb caused panic at Epsom and Ewell Borough Council today when a member of the public dropped off a suspicious device at the council’s reception desk.
Surrey Police acted quickly, setting up a 100-metre cordon around the building and calling in the bomb squad to assess the threat. Nearby residents and council workers were promptly evacuated as a precaution.
The area near The Parade was closed off, with officers advising the public to stay clear of the scene while bomb experts carried out their work.
Fortunately, the device was confirmed to be a suspected WW2 mortar shell and was safely removed by the bomb squad without causing any harm.
Surrey Police issued a statement saying: “The mortar shell has been safely removed from Epsom and Ewell Borough Council offices and the cordon has been lifted. Residents are able to go back to their homes and the town centre has fully reopened. Thank you to everyone for your patience and cooperation.”
The swift response from emergency services prevented any disaster and brought relief to the local community.
