Three brothers from Trowbridge were sentenced to prison after a brutal attack on their grandfather and a vandalism spree involving a sledgehammer. Andrew Smith, 30, Michael Smith, 28, and Joseph Smith, 26, drove to their grandfather’s home in Drayton with the intent to damage his property and vehicles.
The victim, in his seventies, was seriously injured while trying to defend his home during the violent assault. Following the attack, the brothers fled back to Trowbridge but were quickly intercepted by Wiltshire Police, who had identified their vehicle.
After crashing into a wall, Michael and Andrew attempted to escape on foot but were swiftly apprehended. Joseph evaded capture for several days before being arrested on 14 July.
The arrests were the result of close cooperation between Thames Valley and Wiltshire police forces, who worked together to track down the three brothers involved in the violent incident.
At Oxford Crown Court, Michael Smith, who was also found guilty of dangerous driving, received an 18-month prison sentence. Andrew Smith was sentenced to 14 months, while the youngest brother, Joseph Smith, was given a 10-month sentence.
All three had previously pleaded guilty to four counts of criminal damage under £5,000 during a hearing on 15 January.
