Nigel Farage has sensationally resigned as the Member of Parliament for Clacton, Essex, amid an ongoing parliamentary standards investigation concerning undeclared gifts and donations. The leader of Reform UK announced that he will stand in the resulting by-election, describing the contest as a “people versus establishment” battle.
Major political parties including Labour, the Liberal Democrats, the Conservatives, the Greens, and Restore Britain have all decided not to field candidates in the by-election, referring to it as a “circus.”
The investigation focuses on a £5 million gift from donor Christopher Harborne, which was made before Farage became an MP, as well as potential undeclared funding for security and staffing from George Cottrell in the year prior to his election. Farage denies any wrongdoing, but the probe is ongoing.
Additionally, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has declared Farage’s pledge to personally fund the by-election campaign as illegal.
Opposition parties have condemned Farage’s actions. Labour accused him of attempting to deflect attention, with a spokesperson describing the move as “pathetic” and urging the investigation to be allowed to run its course. The Prime Minister labelled the resignation a “desperate stunt,” while Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch accused Farage of “running away from scrutiny” and confirmed that the Conservatives will contest the official by-election following the conclusion of the standards probe.
So far, the only declared challenger in the Clacton by-election is satirical candidate Count Binface. Comedian Jon Harvey, known for running in previous by-elections under various pseudonyms, has also announced his candidacy.
Media tensions have risen, with Farage accusing the press of harassment and sharing footage that appears to show a Sky News journalist at his home. Sky News confirmed their approach to Farage’s residence, stating they sought responses to legitimate questions regarding undisclosed gifts but did not receive any engagement from him.
The Liberal Democrats have labelled Farage a “Temu Trump” and criticised him for evading responsibility. They have called on the government to delay accepting Farage’s resignation until the investigation concludes, insisting that the constituents of Clacton deserve full transparency before heading to the polls.
