A suspect who is alleged to have tried to steal a car after requesting a test drive in Maidstone has been charged.

It is reported that on 29 March 2020, a Honda Civic advertised for sale was driven away by a man in Tonbridge Road, after the owner was distracted and not in the vehicle. A short time later police stopped the Honda on Buckland Hill and the driver was arrested. He was later bailed, pending further investigation.

On 7 April, a Peugeot van was reported stolen from a private car park in London Road. The vehicle was recovered by police officers in Milton Street the following day and Jason Higgins was arrested.

Mr Higgins, aged 49, of Milton Street, Maidstone was charged with two counts of driving a vehicle without the consent of the owner. He was further charged with causing criminal damage to another vehicle and with assaulting an emergency worker (in relation to an allegation he threw a drink over a police staff employee). He was remanded in custody to appear before Medway Magistrates’ Court on 9 April.
