56 Children Freed from Horrific Exploitation in Operation Priscas Raid

Over eight days in December, authorities across West Africa smashed human trafficking networks, rescuing 56 underage victims trapped in sexual exploitation, forced labour in gold mines, markets, and homes. The major coordinated effort was part of Interpol’s Operation Priscas, running from December 5-12.

Massive Raids Target Traffickers in West Africa

In Côte d’Ivoire, police blitzed major routes with vehicle checks, unmasking 35 victims, including eight minors, traveling with two notorious traffickers. The pair, wanted nationally for two years over a ruthless sexual exploitation ring, tried to hide among the victims. They were caught thanks to cross-checks against Interpol’s West African Police Information System (WAPIS).

Meanwhile, Burkina Faso’s officers used vehicle profiling to find 10 children en route to an illegal gold mine. The kids, lacking any ID, were swiftly rescued while their exploitative ‘employer’ was arrested. Investigations continue.

Children Freed from Markets and Clubs

  • In Benin, four children were liberated from forced labour in Dantokpa market, West Africa’s largest open-air market.
  • In Togo, authorities stopped a Nigerian woman travelling with five victims, including three minors, who were destined for sexual exploitation in clubs rather than the hair salon advertised. Their case is now with the Central Directorate of Judicial Police.

Interpol’s Vital Role in Snaring Traffickers

Interpol played a crucial role, deploying an officer to its Regional Bureau in Abidjan where over 202,000 instant database checks helped identify victims and suspects. Experts from Interpol’s Human Trafficking Expert Group advised on complex cases. Blue Notices to track further suspects will be issued soon.

“As countries and officers cooperate, making the most of our systems and global network, we see the net widening and more criminals identified,” said Jürgen Stock, Interpol Secretary General. “Victims of all ages are safeguarded after being removed from exploitation, and suspects face justice. This is the very essence of INTERPOL.”

Operation Priscas: A Beacon of Hope

The operation was named after a young girl rescued in 2015 during Interpol’s Operation Akoma. Now thriving, she symbolizes the fight against trafficking efforts like Operation Priscas, which give victims a second chance at life.
