Met Police Website and Twitter Hacked in Cyber Attack

The Met Police have confirmed part of their website was hacked. Their official Twitter account was also taken over, blasting out unauthorised tweets that racked up record retweets from its 1.22 million followers.

What Happened?

A Met spokesman revealed the breach happened in the newsroom section of their website, which is run by an outside supplier. Thankfully, the hack did not touch the Force’s core crime management or command systems. Operational capabilities remain safe and sound.

“All the relevant authorities have been notified,” said the spokesman.

Investigation Underway

The Met Police, National Crime Agency, and the National Cyber Security Centre have joined forces to probe the attack.

Roy Smith, duty Superintendent, tweeted:

“We are aware that the @metpoliceuk has been subject to unauthorised access. Our media team are working hard to delete the messages and secure the account. Please ignore any Tweets until we verify it’s back under official control.”
