Fraud Probe Launched Over Memorial Fund for Tragic Crash Victims
Suspicious GoFundMe Sparks Police Investigation
Wiltshire Police are hunting fraudsters behind a fake online fundraiser set up in memory of four young men who died in a fatal crash earlier this year. The bogus GoFundMe page, named “Jordan, Corey, Matt, Ryan Memorial”, was created shortly after the tragic smash on the A4 at Derry Hill in August.
Victims Remembered, But Families Sidestepped
The four lads – 20-year-olds Ryan Nelson and Jordan Rawlings, and 19-year-olds Corey Owen and Matthew Parke – lost their lives in the devastating collision. Shockingly, none of the families had any involvement in the fundraiser, which has raised fears their friends and well-wishers have been scammed.
Three Arrested as Police Crack Down
- On October 22, Wiltshire officers swooped in Northamptonshire to arrest a 32-year-old woman and a 17-year-old boy, both suspected of fraud by false representation.
- On December 2, a 36-year-old man was also detained on fraud charges. During the arrest, police found a significant haul of Class A drugs at his property, leading to further charges of possession with intent to supply.
All three suspects remain released under investigation as inquiries continue.
Community Left Reeling, Police Urge Donors to Come Forward
Inspector James Brain said: “This crash devastated Calne’s community. Many saw the page as a heartfelt tribute to the four young men. I know people will feel upset and angry. We’re doing thorough investigations to get to the truth about this page.”
