Violent Clash Erupts at Knowsley Refugee Rally
Three arrested after chaotic protest against refugees in Prescot, Knowsley. Missiles were hurled at police, smashing a police vehicle—but thankfully, no injuries reported.
Roads Shut as Police Contain Disorder
Merseyside Police warned locals to steer clear of the area amid ongoing road closures. Assistant Chief Constable Paul White blasted the violent scenes:
“We will always respect the right to protest when it is peaceful, but the scenes tonight were completely unacceptable, putting those present, our officers, and the wider community in danger.”
He added, “Officers and police vehicles being damaged while protecting the public is disgraceful. We’ve arrested some suspects and are reviewing CCTV and images.”
Protests Fueled by False Claims on Social Media
The unrest followed misinformation spread online about refugees supposedly being “feather-bedded” at the Suites Hotel in Knowsley. Sir George Howarth, Knowsley’s MP, slammed the falsehoods stoking tension:
“It is too early to draw conclusions until police complete their investigation. Those trying to inflame the situation are categorically wrong. The people of Knowsley are not bigots and warmly welcome those fleeing danger.”
He confirmed he referred the misleading social media post to police and council to investigate.
Officials Condemn Violence in Strong Terms
Emily Spurrell, Merseyside’s Police and Crime Commissioner, described the scenes as “deeply shocking and concerning.” On Twitter, she said:
“Absolutely unacceptable behaviour, endangering officers and the public. I am closely monitoring the situation. There are no justifications for this.”
In a related incident, a police van was set ablaze during violent protests outside a housing facility for asylum seekers in Merseyside.
The situation remains tense as police pursue further arrests and continue their investigation.
