Police are rolling out high-tech “sting” bikes to catch bike thieves red-handed in Beeston and beyond.
Smart Bikes on Patrol
These bikes look ordinary but are packed with cutting-edge tech designed to track down criminals. They’ve already hit the streets of Beeston, where bike thefts have surged, and can soon be spotted across the entire Broxtowe borough.
Police Crackdown Begins
Inspector Mike Ebbins, Broxtowe’s District Commander, said:
“We are aware bikes are being stolen in Beeston. The purpose of this tactic is two-fold – to catch offenders and to make them think twice.”
He added,
“We want to send a clear message: we’re serious about putting the brakes on bike thefts. These bikes are just one of our tools to prevent crime and reunite victims with their property.”
How You Can Protect Your Ride
Inspector Ebbins emphasised the impact of bike theft:
“Losing a bike hits victims hard—financially and emotionally. For many, it’s their only way to get to work or school.”
He urged owners to:
- Use top-quality locks
- Never leave bikes unsecured
- Park in busy, well-lit areas
- Lock both wheels and frame to a stand or railings
“Thieves strike fast, often taking seconds to snatch an unlocked bike,” the Inspector warned. “Be vigilant to avoid becoming a victim.”
