Terrifying Beach Rescue as Teen Buried Alive in Sand Pit Collapse
A 14-year-old boy faced a nightmare at Anderby Creek when the sand hole he was digging suddenly collapsed, burying almost his entire body.
Witnesses say the youngster was standing upright in the hole when the sandy collapse struck.
Parents Act Quickly, Coastguards Step In
His quick-thinking parents immediately dug sand from his mouth, keeping his airway clear until emergency crews from nearby Skegness and Mablethorpe arrived just before 1pm on Saturday.
Fran Wilkins, senior coastal operations officer for HM Coastguard, described the rescue as a “challenging task.”
“What happens when you disturb the sand is that it has a high likelihood of collapsing back in, and the priority was to make sure his airway was protected at all times and his head remained above the sand,” she explained.
One Hour to Freedom
Rescue teams carefully dug the boy out over the course of an hour before ambulance crews checked him over.
“Fortunately, he remained calm throughout, which definitely helped reduce the panic and allowed everyone to get on and do their job,” said Wilkins.
She also praised the parents’ presence of mind:
“They kept his head clear and his mouth and nose free so he could breathe and waited for more to help.”
