Five-Year-Old Sparks Massive Beach Search After Vanishing at Dymchurch

A Hythe mum had her worst nightmare on Sunday when her adventurous five-year-old son, Winston, mysteriously disappeared at Dymchurch beach. What started as a family seaside treat quickly turned into a frantic 90-minute manhunt involving dozens of desperate helpers.

Family Outing Turns Into Panic as Winston Goes Missing

Candy Archer, her husband Ryan, and their three kids—teenager Maxim, seven-year-old Alessandra, and little Winston—headed to the beach for a fun day out. “One minute he was there, the next he was gone,” Candy recalled. Winston, a seasoned explorer despite his tender age, had even needed stitches from a previous beach mishap at Hythe.

The drama unfolded moments after Candy stayed behind to pay for parking while Ryan took the kids to the shore. When she joined them, Winston had vanished without a trace.

Massive Search Effort Mobilised as Fear Mounts

“At first, we thought he had wandered off to join another picnic or play with other kids,” Candy said. But as time dragged on, dread took hold. The family’s spot near the High Knocke Estate became the centre of a huge search effort.

“After about 30 minutes, panic really set in. Over 100 people jumped in to help,” Candy added. The coastguard sent boats to comb the shoreline while the Met Police joined the on-foot search. “My husband and I probably ran 10 kilometres each, desperate to find him. We were terrified—he thought Winston had drowned, but I feared something worse.”

Heart-Stopping Rescue and Lessons Learned

After nearly 90 terrifying minutes, relief flooded in: Winston was found safe at Dymchurch Amusements. The youngster had gotten lost looking for seashells, lost his bearings, and was spotted crying on some steps by a kind stranger who guided him to safety.

“My husband ran barefoot to get him and now has cuts all over his feet,” Candy said. Police escorted Winston back, much to his delight. “He thought the police car ride was ‘pretty good’ and was thrilled to show off his biggest shell prize.”

Shaken but thankful, Candy has already bought GPS trackers for the kids to prevent a repeat scare. “It was the scariest moment in our lives, but we’re beyond grateful to everyone who helped find our boy.”
