Firearms Cop Caught Nodding Off with Loaded Guns Gets Slap on Wrist

A South Yorkshire Police firearms officer has been hit with a written warning after falling asleep while armed with two loaded weapons. PC Samad Sagir dozed off for around a minute during an early morning operation – a blunder that has sparked outrage and questions about police discipline.

PC Sagir Caught Snoozing On Duty

The incident happened on 12 January 2022, when PC Sagir was a passenger in an Armed Response Vehicle. Armed with a Heckler and Koch G36 Carbine and a Glock 17 pistol, he nodded off en route to an operation in woodlands/">the Woodlands and Stainforth areas.

The misconduct hearing report states: “The officer was a firearms officer. He was on duty with another firearms officer. They were deployed to the Woodlands area at around 4 am and then to the Stainforth area. While en route, the officer fell asleep in the passenger seat. He was still armed.”

He woke briefly when a message came through on the radio. The panel ruled this conduct was a breach of professional standards but given the short lapse, a written warning was handed down.

Allegations of Harassment Thrown Out

The same hearing examined separate claims of inappropriate and sexually harassing behaviour towards two colleagues. These accusations were found unproven, and no further action was taken.

Delay in Discipline Sparks Concern

The sleepy mishap happened over two years ago, but the investigation and disciplinary process dragged on, prompting criticism. Many question why it took so long to hold PC Sagir to account, especially given the life-or-death nature of his role.

Sleepy History and Public Backlash

  • PC Sagir was also caught nodding off during two prior training sessions.
  • The incidents raise concerns over his fitness for the demanding firearms role.
  • South Yorkshire Police have yet to say if he’ll keep his position.

This case has ignited debate about the pressure on firearms officers and how the police enforce accountability. The written warning is a stark reminder of the huge responsibility officers bear when carrying loaded guns in the public’s name.
