Power Outage Sparks Heathrow Havoc: Over 1,300 Flights Grounded
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has praised emergency workers after a massive power outage caused chaos at Heathrow Airport. The disruption, triggered by a fire at an electrical substation in west London, has grounded flights, stranded passengers, and caused widespread havoc.
Fire at North Hyde Substation Sparks Mass Disruption
The blaze erupted just after 11pm on Thursday night (March 20) at the North Hyde substation in Hayes. The fire knocked out power across the area, forcing the cancellation or diversion of more than 1,300 flights. Thousands of travellers were left stranded as Heathrow shut down its operations.
“I know the situation in Heathrow is causing distress and disruption, especially for those travelling or without power in their homes. I’m receiving regular updates and I’m in close contact with partners on the ground. Thanks to our emergency workers for keeping people safe,” Sir Keir posted on X (formerly Twitter).
Fire Under Control But Cause Still Unknown
London Fire Brigade tackled the blaze through the night, bringing it under control by 6.28am Friday. Investigations into the exact cause are ongoing.
Heathrow Remains Closed With No Power Restoration Timeline
Heathrow Airport confirmed it will stay closed until at least 11.59pm on Friday due to the ongoing power issues. The airport warned of “significant disruption over the coming days”, with knock-on effects expected at other UK and global airports.
Airport officials admitted they “do not yet have clarity on when power may be reliably restored”, leaving travellers and airlines in limbo.
