Elderly Man Found Dead at Home in Suspected Painkiller Overdose

Tragic Discovery in Romford

Charles George King, 84, was found lifeless in his bed at his Gidea Park home on February 13. His daughter, worried after days without contact, broke in with a friend to check on him. Police arrived but found no signs of foul play.

Coroner Points to Drug Toxicity and Health Issues

Senior coroner Graeme Irvine told East London Coroner’s Court that Mr King’s death was likely caused by a mix of existing health problems and drug toxicity. A post-mortem by Dr Vasi Sundaresan revealed “acute respiratory failure and coma,” with emphysema and drug-related toxicity as key factors.

“Mr King was found lying unresponsive on his bed. Officers could not determine a definitive cause of death,” said Mr Irvine. “The toxicity, while not the sole cause, played a significant contributory role.”

Family Involved as Inquest Opens

The family have been named “interested persons,” giving them access to evidence and witnesses. The coroner has asked them to provide statements about Mr King’s prescriptions or possible purchase of the painkillers, plus any concerns about his death.

Mr King’s GP has also been ordered to hand over full medical records, including prescribed medications and risk assessments related to overdose.

Final Inquest Set for October

The inquest, scheduled for October, aims to clarify the exact circumstances around the death and explore whether future tragedies can be prevented. Inquests are routine for sudden or unexplained deaths and serve the public interest.
