Three Arrested After Chaos at Knowsley Refugee Rally
Tensions exploded in Prescot, Knowsley, as a protest against refugees turned violent. Three people were arrested on suspicion of violent disorder after missiles were hurled at police officers during the evening clash.
A police vehicle was damaged, but thankfully no injuries were reported. Authorities have warned locals to avoid the area as road closures remain in force.
Police Slam Protest Violence
Assistant Chief Constable Paul White condemned the mayhem. “We respect peaceful protest, but tonight’s scenes were completely unacceptable,” he said. “Our officers, those present, and the wider community were put at risk.”
He added: “No serious injuries reported, but damaging officers and police vehicles while on duty is disgraceful. We have arrested suspects and will examine all CCTV and other evidence coming in.”
Protests Fueled by Social Media Misinformation
The unrest followed protests outside the Suites Hotel, which houses asylum seekers. Police in Merseyside also faced a similar storm as a police van was set on fire amid growing tension.
Knowsley MP Sir George Howarth blamed an “alleged incident posted on social media” for sparking the demonstration. He slammed false claims that refugees were “feather-bedded” at the hotel, calling such misinformation “categorically incorrect.”
“The people of Knowsley are not bigots. They welcome those fleeing danger worldwide. Protesters tonight do not reflect this community, which treats others with sympathy and kindness,” Sir George said.
Officials Demand Calm and Due Process
Emily Spurrell, Merseyside’s Police and Crime Commissioner, branded the violence “deeply shocking and concerning.”
“Absolutely unacceptable behaviour, putting officers and the public in danger. I am closely monitoring the situation. There are no justifications for this,” she said.
Authorities continue their investigations, urging anyone with information or footage to come forward. The message is clear: misinformation will not fuel hate in Knowsley.
