Chaos has erupted on the M23 this morning following a lorry crash that has shut the entire southbound carriageway in West Sussex. The incident occurred between Junction 10 (Crawley) and Junction 11 (Pease Pottage), resulting in significant traffic disruption.
The crash happened just after 4:00am on 18 May 2025 when a lorry veered across the central reservation. This caused the vehicle’s fuel tank to rupture, spilling gallons of diesel across the road surface. The collision also severely damaged the central barrier.
Emergency services including Sussex Police, West Sussex Fire & Rescue, South East Coast Ambulance, and National Highways responded promptly to the scene. The lorry was recovered by 7:25am, but the southbound lanes remain closed as teams inspect the road for damage caused by the diesel spill. Resurfacing work may be required to ensure safety.
In addition to the southbound closure, Lane 3 on the northbound side is also closed due to barrier damage, further compounding traffic problems in the area.
Motorists are advised to follow diversion routes marked by hollow diamond signs: exit at Junction 10 (Crawley), take the A2011 westbound towards Tushmore Gyratory, join the A23 southbound, and re-enter the M23 at Junction 11 (Pease Pottage).
National Highways has warned drivers to expect long delays, plan alternative routes, and allow extra travel time this morning.
