Gareth Southgate’s England squad are set to face Serbia at 8pm on Sunday, 16 June 2024, marking the start of the eagerly awaited Euro 2024 tournament hosted in Germany. Fans across the UK are gearing up for what promises to be an exciting competition from the very first whistle.
In preparation for the tournament, police are intensifying efforts to maintain peace and prevent disorder. Authorities are focusing on stopping high-risk individuals from travelling to Germany, particularly those with Football Banning Orders. Offenders have been contacted and instructed to surrender their passports before the tournament begins to reduce the risk of trouble abroad.
Local Community Safety Units have been actively collaborating with licensed venues and event organisers. Their aim is to provide safety guidance to ensure that pubs, clubs, and bars showing live match screenings remain trouble-free throughout the games.
With emotions expected to run high during matches, extra police officers will be deployed to patrol key hotspots. Their role will be to quickly respond to any outbreaks of disorder and to support anyone who feels at risk or becomes a victim of crime.
Chief Superintendent Simon Alland from Kent Police said: ‘We want everyone to enjoy the tournament in a safe and responsible manner. That’s why we’ve worked closely with local event organisers to provide advice on minimising trouble and creating a safe space for football fans.’
He added, ‘Football stirs passion, especially at big tournaments, but violence won’t be tolerated – whether in public or behind closed doors. There’s simply no excuse for it.’
